The Matteson Historical Congress of America Inc. was founded in 1940 by three men, Rev. John Clarke Matteson, Sheldon Porter Matteson, and Burt Ray Matteson.
Early in 1940, the Reverend John Matteson learned about Porter Matteson and visited him at his home in Columbus, Ohio, where they spent several days exchanging information and ideas, and talking about a meeting of descendants of Henry Matteson. Later with the help of Mrs. Pearl (Matteson) Griffiths, Burt Matteson was added to their group.
The three men set the foundation for an organization devoted to the descendants of Henry Matteson.
The first meeting was held at Chautauqua, New York on September 1, 1940 with 233 people attending representing 10 states. Reunions have been held yearly since that date with the exception being from 1942 to 1945 when it was decided that none would be held on account of World War II. In 1981 the Congress was incorporated as a non-profit organization in the State of Vermont.
Annual reunions continue to this day, with each being held in a different state and hosted by a member from that state.
Membership in The Matteson Historical Congress of America Inc. is open to all descendants of Henry Matteson, the immigrant, who are at least sixteen years of age, or the spouse of one.
